The Disability Integration Act, jointly introduced by Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) in the Senate (S.117) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) in the House (H.R.555), is federal legislation intended to ensure that people with disabilities can live in the community rather than be forced into nursing facilities and other institutions. This ground-breaking civil rights legislation requires public entities and Long Term Service and Supports insurance providers to change their policies, provide community-based services first, and offer HCBS to people currently in institutions.
